Hersh Markusfeld

Hersh is President and CEO of SHM, a consulting firm he formed with several associates in 1986. The initial product focus was LTCI, where SHM worked with distributors and insurers to develop innovative and competitive preferred risk products that were marketed through LTCI sales specialists and sponsored groups.

Under Hersh's leadership, the firm's product focus has expanded to include CII and combo annuity / life products. SHM has also developed proprietary pricing methodologies which are designed to better meet customer needs and budget constraints, especially for those planning for retirement (ages 40 - 70).

In the past 10 years, Hersh also co-founded two other successful insurance start-up ventures: Matrix Direct (acquired by AIG in 2005), a pioneer in online sales of term life insurance; IntelliScript (formerly IntelRx prior to acquisition by Milliman, Inc. in 2007) which provides online prescription profiles and related analytical tools to medical underwriters.

From 1975 to 1985, Hersh was with Fireman's Fund American Life Insurance Company (FFAL), a subsidiary of American Express. During this period he was the profit center executive, and later EVP, responsible for group and mass marketed business which included group health insurance sold through independent agents, direct response sales to American Express cardmembers, and special risk / association business sold and administered primarily by TPA's. Under his leadership, the business unit pre-tax profits increased from $2 million to over $20 million and revenues increased five-fold. Hersh was also instrumental in helping to build FFAL into an industry leader in the field of long-term care insurance.
